The Milwaukee Brewers are one victory away from their first World Series title after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night. The win gives Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, placing the franchise on the brink of a championship that has eluded them since 1982. Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Milwaukee’s offense exploded in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs with two outs to take an 8-1 lead. It is the first time in World Series history that a team has scored eight runs with two outs in a single inning. The rally began after Jackson Chourio stole second base, followed by a walk to Christian Yelich. Brice Turang then hit a two-run single that bounced off shortstop Taylor Walls’ glove, opening the floodgates for the Brewers.
Rookie left-hander Robert Gasser dominated the mound, pitching six perfect innings while allowing only one hit. Gasser faced the minimum 18 batters, becoming the first starter to do so in a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001. He retired 14 consecutive batters before Victor Mesa Jr. walked to begin the sixth inning. Gasser has allowed just one run in 15 innings across his three postseason starts.
Jackson Chourio was the offensive centerpiece, finishing 4-for-5 with a double and a stolen base. He became the second-youngest player in World Series history to record four hits and a steal in a single game, behind only Ty Cobb in 1908. Manager Pat Murphy praised Chourio’s focus, noting that the outfielder has eight hits in three games of the series. Chourio compared his discipline to that of Kobe Bryant, a player he has studied closely.
The Rays, who led the American League with 98 wins in the regular season, struggled to contain the Brewers’ attack. Starter Freddy Peralta, the ALCS MVP, gave up five runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the difficulty of coming back from a 3-0 deficit, noting that only the 2004 Boston Red Sox have ever won a series after falling behind 3-0 in the postseason. The Rays have never won a World Series in their 29 seasons in the major leagues.
Milwaukee’s path to the series final has been dominant. The team, which led the majors with 103 wins, swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. A victory in Game 4 would make the Brewers the first team to sweep both the LCS and the World Series since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds. The Brewers have won eight straight postseason games, tying the record for a single postseason run.
