President Donald Trump spoke to a crowd in Corinth, Mississippi, on Monday, his voice audibly hoarse as he sought to boost Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. The visit marks a pivotal stop in a closing midterm rally blitz that has exposed vulnerabilities for Republicans in a state they have dominated for decades.

The political situation in Mississippi has shifted unexpectedly. While the state is among the nation's most reliably Republican, Democrat Scott Colom has mounted a stiff challenge against Hyde-Smith. Colom, a local prosecutor, is leveraging widespread voter discontent over inflation and the Iran war to expand the battleground map. If elected, he would become Mississippi's first Black senator since the Reconstruction era.

Colom was present at the rally site, creating a rare interaction between the president and a candidate Trump later described as a Marxist radical. Colom told reporters that voters deserve a senator who listens to their concerns. He noted that he had planned to visit the site to hear what Trump supporters were thinking before the president arrived.

Trump's Monday event initiates a week of aggressive campaigning. The president plans additional stops in Texas, South Carolina, and Iowa, all of which he won comfortably in 2024. Officials announced late Monday that Trump will hold another rally in Salina, Kansas, on Saturday. This will be his second visit to the state in less than two weeks.

Democratic leaders are also expanding their efforts to reclaim control of the Senate and House. Former Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned in Wisconsin with Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. Harris called the race for governor tight because the stakes are high. In Michigan, Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed distanced himself from an advertisement that blamed high grocery prices on U.S. support for Israel.

Vice President JD Vance returned to Kansas to campaign for Senator Roger Marshall. Vance addressed a crowd in a steel-fabricating warehouse in north Topeka. Marshall, who has raised less money than his opponent, told supporters that Democrats are treating this election like a presidential year. Vance had earlier campaigned in Belgrade, Montana, for Republican congressional candidate Aaron Flint.

Senate Democrats have invested $1.2 million in a late entry into the Mississippi contest. The state has not elected a new Democratic senator since 1947. Trump said he expected gas prices to rise higher due to the war with Iran but noted that the situation would be over soon.
